Rose Shields and her daughter Nevaeh Archuleta, 8, receive a backpack filled with school supplies during the Junior League of Longview's School Supply Train last year at Longview First Baptist Church's ROC activity center.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported when families should preregister. Parents should call from July 17 to 19 to preregister for an appointment.

The annual School Supply Train always is fun for Stephanie Tate, who oversees the program for the Junior League of Longview.

“It’s just a great thing,” she said. “I think it’s so neat to see the kids … come and get their backpacks. They’re just so excited to get a backpack with their supplies, and it’s so neat to see that excitement for the kids that may not be able to get out there and get a backpack or school supplies they need for school. It’s exciting to see the kids’ smiles on their faces.”

The Junior League, in partnership with Buckner Children and Family Services and the ROC at First Baptist Church of Longview, has set its annual giveaway Aug. 5, providing 2,500 children with a grade-appropriate backpack filled with school supplies, a uniform shirt, a pair of shoes and free haircut and vision screening.

Families can preregister and guarantee backpacks for their children by calling Buckner Children and Family Services at (903) 757-9383 from July 17 to 19 to set up an appointment. Parents will need to bring ID, proof of school enrollment for each child and proof of family income.

The giveaway is scheduled Aug. 5 as long as supplies last. Families do not have to preregister to receive a backpack, but Tate said preregistration is the only way to guarantee a backpack.

“If you preregister for the event … we have a separate line for our preregistered people, they come, their backpacks are ready to go, we have them in bags,” she said. “If it’s like a family, we go ahead and put all the family backpacks in one one bag, the shoes, and it’s kind of like you come, you pick it up and you’re done.

“Then the other people that don’t register for the event, it’s kind of like a first-come, first-served thing. We will pass the supplies out and the backpacks out and the uniforms out, shoes out. (We) still give you haircuts and vision screenings (while) the supplies last.”

Supplies at this past year’s giveaway ran out by the afternoon, Tate said.

Junior League members will begin sorting and packing backpacks at the end of July at the ROC center. Tate said if volunteers are interested in helping or donating to the event, they can call the Junior League of Longview at (903) 757-5740 or Buckner Children and Family Services at (903) 757-9383.

“All the hard work is paid off when you see those kids get so excited about their supplies and uniforms for going back to school,” she said.
